Shea Butter Tree : The Tree of Life!

The Shea Butter tree also known as “The Tree of Life” has some absolutely amazing properties! They included the following:

-It grows very well on a wide range of soils, including highly degraded, arid, semi-arid and rocky soil.

-It has a thick waxy and deeply fissured bark that makes it fire resistant.

-The shea tree grows naturally in the wild in the dry Savannah belt of West Africa from Senegal in the west to Sudan in the east, and onto the foothills of the Ethiopian highlands.

-It grows in 19 countries across the African continent

-According to legend among local people no one owns the shea tree, because it germinates and grows on its own.

-When it passes the germination stage in about three to five years, it becomes fire resistant.

-Once it survives the first five years of its early stages of germination and growth, it grows slowly and takes about 30 years to reach maturity and from here, it can live for up to three hundred years.

-In the absence of any hazards, including tree felling, it can bear fruit for two hundred years.

Fair Trade and Your Skin Care Products - PART II

Welcome back to PART II of Fair Trade and Your Skin Care Products! October is Fair Trade Month and to commemorate it we are offering 20% off all Purely Shea products. Just type in the discount code saveonshea at check out.

Consumers should check their products and try to buy products from companies who pay fair prices for the production and work that goes into gathering and preparing the product. How would you feel to know that your favorite Shea Butter product was brought to you by the sweat and grueling work of a family in another country? Most of them are. In fact, how would you feel to know that the same family gets paid little to nothing for their work, but they have to continue working because their very lives depend on that little bit of money? You would probably feel pretty bad. It can make you really think when you are rubbing on a premium lotion or shampoo.

That's why some Shea Butter companies in the US specifically work with groups that gather the ingredients, or make the products. They realize that it's important to pay a fair amount so that these farmers and workers get paid fairly for what they do. It reduces poverty, and allows those families to have more than just the basic survival needs. Fair Trade also allows communities to grow and flourish, the promotion of democratic organizations, fair labor conditions, direct trade opportunities, and environmental sustainability. Purchase your Shea Butter from a company that ensures that their producers are getting paid fairly, and check your labels on other products for the Fair Trade Certified seal. For more information about Shea Butter please visit Purely Shea.

Fair Trade and Your Skin Care Products - Part I

Did you know that October is FAIR TRADE MONTH?
If you've never heard of Fair Trade, what it does is allow farmers and workers around the world to be paid better for their work. Many of the products you use are produced by farmers and other workers who work from sun up until sun down to produce the products, or the things that are in many products. They are often in poverty, and are unable to have even the basic necessities, although they work so hard.

Fair Trade is helping those farmers and workers earn more money. They are able to get out of poverty and earn a decent living for themselves and their families. There are now 'Fair Trade' products. You will see a Fair Trade seal on products that are produced by workers and farmers who are being paid better earnings for their labor. Currently, in the United States, there is only one third party certifier of Fair Trade products, and that is Transfair USA. They certify products like coffee, tea, herbs, sugar, fresh fruit, and rice.

Shea Butter comes from workers who also work very hard to produce it. While some companies take advantage of the low prices for such hard work, some companies like Purely Shea work with several women's cooperative groups. These groups provide excellent quality unrefined Shea Butter for the company at competitive and fair prices. Unfortunately, Transfair USA doesn't certify Shea Butter as of yet, but there have been many, many requests that they start.

Check back next time for PART II of Fair Trade and Your Skin Care Products.

Lavender Shea Butter for Pregnant Moms

Bringing a new life into the world is exciting and thrilling but can also be quite a stressful time to women. Nurturing the body with healthy, safe and effective personal care products like Lavender Shea Butter can reduce stress for mothers-to-be.

The Journal of Advanced Nursing talks about a study in which blind randomized clinical trial is described, involving three groups of mothers, one using pure lavender oil, one a synthetic lavender oil and one an inert substance as a bath additive for 10 days following normal childbirth. The study showed that between the 3rd and 5th days those women using pure lavender oil as a bath additive had lower mean discomfort scores.

Smoother, Firmer, Younger Skin

One of the oldest forms of healing dating back thousands of years is massage. When most people think of massage they think of going to the spa and having massages on their shoulder, back, legs, etc. Many people do not realize the benefits of a regular facial massage

Benefits of a Facial Massage
A facial massage using a rich revitilaizing moisturizer like Shea Butter instantly stimulates circulation while enhancing your skin color. Years of research have shown that facial massages do the following:

  • Decrease fine lines and skin sagging

  • Normalize the skin’s delicate moisture balance

  • Release impurities that could damage your complexion

  • Leave skin more radiant and younger-looking

With a Shea Butter Facial Massage, you can experience all the benefits of a traditional facial within the privacy of your home.

Shea Butter Facial Massage Directions:
1. Maximize the revitalizing benefits of your Shea Facial Massage by creating a quiet, serene environment.

2. Always start with a clean face. Smooth Shea Butter over your face and on your fingertips, using enough to allow your fingers to glide on your face. Apply more as needed throughout the massage.

3. While using light strokes and circular motions, work the shea butter in from the middle of your face outward.

4. Starting from your collarbone going towards your chin, stroke your neck gently in upward strokes to prevent crows neck.

5. Starting from the sides of your nose and going towards your forehead, gently massage the area around the eyes

Chocolate Shea Butter Controversy

Did you know that fine rich European Chocolates are often made with Shea Butter?

In Europe and Asia, substituting cocoa butter with vegetable oils such as Shea Butter has been going on for the past 30 years. Now in the US, it's been less than a year since the debate started but chocolate manufacturers would like to do what their European and Asian counterparts have been doing for years.

Some chocolate companies say that's unthinkable however others are in favor of this saying that this will reduce the costs for both them and the consumer. Both the Chocolate and Grocery Manufacturers Associations are behind the proposed changes and insist there will be clear labeling.

Currently, the Food and Drug Administration does not allow manufacturers to use Shea Butter in the United States a cocoa-butter substitute. For more information about this battle please visit the Chocolate Manufacturers Association (CMA) website which has served as the premier trade group for manufacturers and distributors of cocoa and chocolate products in the United States since 1923. http://www.chocolateusa.org/

Paraffin versus Shea Butter Spa Manicure

Do you want the ultimate moisturizing and mega relaxing spa manicure free of toxic chemicals such as paraffin? Paraffin hand treatments have become quite popular however many people are unaware of their potential toxicity. Candle makers are very aware and many of them have switched to soy candles instead.

Well according to the CosmeticsDatabase.com paraffin is a carcinogen, irritant and might also cause major organic system toxicity. But no need to fret-Warm Shea Butter can be used in the place of paraffin for a safe, effective and luxurious spa-manicure. Just follow these steps:

1. Cleanse hands with warm water and natural cleanser.

2. Lightly heat Shea Butter until it is a warm liquid and place the liquid in a bowl.

3. Slowly immerse the hands in the bowl of Shea Butter.

4. Hold fingers slightly apart so that the Shea Butter surrounds each finger.

5. Repeat once or twice with each hand.

6. Cover the hand with a protective plastic liner and then slip on and cover with mittens. This retains heat for a longer treatment.

7. Allow the Shea Butter to remain in place until the heat goes away.

8. Remove and plastic liner and mitten and massage the Shea Butter, working into cuticles and dry spots.

9. Wipe off remaining Shea Butter with a soft cloth.

And there you have it – Ultra soft and supple hands that look younger and smoother without toxic chemicals!

Shea Butter Empowers Native Women

Just ran across an interesting article published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) about how Shea Butter empowers native peoples. UNDP is the United Nations global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. They are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges.

The article is very inspiring. It details the partnership of Japan-UNDP along with women’s Shea Butter cooperatives in Ghana. The article states that “…because of the shea butter project, the Ghanaian entrepreneurs have learnt to work in groups and acquired skills to improve their productivity. They added that they are happy because the training center also serves as an evening adult school, and that the skills have enabled them to participate better in at-home decision making.”

Head to Toe Shea Butter Series - Part IIb

Welcome back to part IIb of the Head to Toe Shea Butter Series. We are still talking about the great Shea Butter uses for the upper body. Today's topic will focus on its usage to relieve muscle aches and tension.

A powerful ingredient called Stigmasterol is in this miracle healing butter. Stigmasterol is a plant sterol, a class of chemical compounds that includes the sex hormones and several other human hormones. It occurs in several plants including soybeans and other oils.

Shea Butter contains a very high percentage of Stigmasterol giving it the ability to deeply decrease inflammation thereby relaxing tired muscles when applied to sore areas. This anti-inflammatory action also decreases pain and swelling as well.

Head to Toe Shea Butter Treatment Series - Part IIIa

We continue our Head to Toe Shea Butter Treatment series today focusing on Shea Butter uses for upper body. These focuses included the following:

NECK

DECOLLETE

CHEST

NECK
As we age, we tend to loose elasticity in not only our face but also the neck area. However, many people do not moisturize their neck as apart of their skincare routine. To prevent lines, wrinkles and “crows” neck it is important that you remember to ALWAYS moisturize your neck along with face using shea butter. Holding your head up as much as possible and avoiding high pillows at bed time will also help to keep your neck wrinkle-free.

DECOLLETE
This is also a neglected and vulnerable area often forgotten during skincare. This aea deserves the same Shea Butter Treatment we give to our face and our necks. To lock in extra moisture, apply the shea butter after showering with slightly damp skin for superb anti-aging properties and velvety smooth skin.

CHEST
Shea Butter is especially helpful to the new breastfeeding mom who experiences soreness, cracking, and peeling from nursing. Shea Butter provides soothing long-lasting relief for breastfeeding moms everywhere. It is also safe and effective for preventing stretch marks around the bust.

Next time we will focuse on a few other parts of the upper body like abdomen, back and arms.

Is Shea Butter a Cure for Pain?

Several studies have shown shea butter to contain super effective anti-inflammatory compounds called triterpenes. Tripterpenes are found in a lot of different plants and they protect plants against fungal infections, viruses and harmful bacteria.

The Shea Butter triterpenes are unique because they also stop inflammation throughout the body. In fact, research has shown that these are the most powerful inflammation fighter of any known botanical in the world!

This is extremely important because pain is caused by inflammation so it is important to stop it is important to reduce inflammation as much as possible to remain pain free. To read the full story about the power of Shea Butter Tripterpenes click on the following link to check out the press release:http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/08-09-2007/0004642345&EDATE=

Head to Toe Shea Butter Treatments - Part II b

Welcome to Part II b of the “Head to Toe Shea Butter Treatments” series. We mentioned in Part I the many uses of Shea Butter for your hair. Today we’ll talk about some facial options for this miracle cream such as an anti-aging treatment, exfoliation, make-up primer and while tweezing/shaving.

Anti-Aging Treatment
One of the best ways to prevent premature aging is to keep the skin soft and supple by moisturizing daily. Shea Butter keeps the skin ultra moisturized to prevent premature aging of the skin. The high amounts of vitamin A in Certified Unrefined Organic Shea Butter also help to promote epidermis cell development and fibroblast activity. Vitamin E is also abundant in this plant butter serving as an anti-free radical agent thereby preventing wrinkles and sagging.

Exfoliation
Exfoliating allows products to penetrate better. That's because exfoliating removes the surface layer of dead cells that can limit how much of your moisturizer gets through.
For a smooth, all-natural exfoliating scrub grab the following:
1. Organic fine ground sugar
2. Your favorite all-natural facial cleanser
3. Purely Shea Organic Unrefined Shea Butter

While washing your face with your favorite cleanser, once or twice a week add a handful of the organic sugar and a little organic shea butter and lightly massage into skin and rinse. You will instantly notice soft glowing skin! You will also notice that your moisturizers are much better absorbed into the skin.

Make-up Primer
So many people have traded in their toxic, chemical-laden cosmetics for all-natural beautiful mineral make-up.
However, those of us with really dry skin have noticed that mineral make-up left us looking overly dry and cakey. Our Solution? Purely Shea shea butter to the rescue! Apply shea butter sparingly underneath foundation and let it sink for a few minutes to avoid streaking. The result? Glowy and radiant mineral make-up without the ashy dryness.

Tweezing/Shaving
I had my eyebrows waxed and tweezed this weekend. Although they look amazing, it hurt a lot and left a red rash with raised bumps! So it was Shea Butter to the rescue. Within minutes Purely Shea soothed the area and an hour later all the redness and bumps disappeared.Purely Shea is also great for shaving. In fact, premium quality organic unrefined shea butter reduces the shearing force between the skin and the blade. This allows for a less traumatic, smoother, and closer shave. Additionally, since the shea butter continues to nourish and moisturize the shaved area, this eliminates the need for after-shave lotions and creams.Unrefined Certified Organic Shea Butter is a superior shaving cream for the following reasons:

• Conditions and prepares the skin for the shave

• Protects the skin during the shave

• Nourishes the skin after the skin

• Encourages natural healing of the skin after the shave

Shea Butter as a Cleansing Oil

Welcome back to Part II of our Head to Toe Shea Butter treatment series! Last time we talked about the many different uses starting with the top of your head. Now we will focus on the many facial options for this miracle cream such as a cosmetic remover, moisturizer, exfoliation, anti-aging-treatment, and as a make-up primer. Today we will focus first on using Shea Butter as a Cosmetic Remover.

Cosmetic Remover
When removing make-up from your skin, it is important that you keep in mind that oil dissolves oil. This means that an oil such as Shea Butter is great for removing oil based cosmetics. In fact, oil alone will not cause blemishes which are a result of several different factors including hormones, bacteria, dead skin cells and the buildup these on your skin.

Shea Butter can be used as a cleansing oil for easy removal of all cream and grease makeup. After makeup has been removed, the skin feels fresh and relaxed as it deeply cleans while preserving the skin's necessary protective lipid layer.

First begin by evenly massaging the butter into makeup areas of the skin. This causes the makeup to gently dissolve. Next follow the steps below for amazing make-up removal:

-Use a soft terry cloth (organic cotton would be great!) and rinse it in hot steamy water. Place it over your face after wringing it out.

-Gently wipe your face an neck with the steamy wash cloth in soft upward circular motions

- Repeat once or twice if necessary

- Use luke-warm water if you have dry skin (cold water if you have oily skin) and splash on your skin

- Pat dry with a soft terry towel

Now enjoy your clean, healthy glowing skin which is soft and supple and NEVER taut or tight from harsh make-up removers.

The following step involves moisturizing and we will talk about this next time.

Head to Toe Shea Butter Treatments - Part 1

People often ask us on what parts of their bodies can they apply Shea Butter. The answer is of course EVERYWHERE! We will spend the next few posts giving you specific details of how to use Shea Butter from head to toe staring with your hair.

Pre-Shampoo Treatment
Hot Oil Treatment
Conditioner
Hairdressing Pomade

Pre-Shampoo Treatment
A pre-shampoo treatment is recommended if you have very parched and damaged hair. It is also great for anyone with chemically treated hair, colored hair, and for those who use heat appliances on their hair. It provides deep moisturization and strengthens the hair cuticle.

1. Begin by melting Shea Butter in a stainless steal or glass saucepan on the lowest heat setting on your stove top. (Using higher temperatures and/or a microwave will denature it and decrease its healing effects.)
2. Massage through hair an cover with plastic cap.
3. Allow it to remain in hair for at least 30 minutes. You may leave it overnight as well.
4. Follow-up with shampoo.

Hot Oil Treatment
Hot oil treatments are often used to restore the natural orders in the hair which are often stripped after shampooing. It also helps to restore moisture to the scalp. Use the same directions as above to use Shea Butter as a hot oil treatment after shampooing the hair.
1. Begin by melting Shea Butter in a stainless steal or glass saucepan on the lowest heat setting on your stove top. (Using higher temperatures and/or a microwave will denature it and decrease its healing effects.)
2. Massage through wet hair after shampooing and cover with plastic cap.
3. Allow it to remain in hair for at least 30 minutes
4. Rinse

Deep Conditioner
While you may not be candidate for the first 2 treatments listed above, deep conditioning should be apart of everyone’s routine! Whether you have chemically-treated, colored hair with massive heat appliance use, been swimming in chlorine water, or just enduring the dry summer sun or the cold windy winter, deep conditioning is a must. Depending on your own situation, this should be done once a week to once a month for healthy beautiful hair.
1. Massage Shea Butter through wet hair after shampooing (you may melt it if you prefer as stated above.)
2. Comb through.
3. Cover with a plastic cap and sit under a dryer or heat cap for 30-60 minutes.
4. Rinse.

Hairdressing Pomade
Finally, Shea Butter can be used daily as a hairdressing cream or pomade. It keeps hair shiny, soft and helps it to stay in place. Simply melt by rubbing a small amount in the palms of your hands and apply to hair as needed.

Do you have any other ideas on to use Shea Butter on the Hair? If so let us know-we are dying to hear your ideas!

Shea Butter: The More the Better

We have all heard the saying that sometimes “less is more.” Well when it comes to Shea Butter this simply not true because more is always better. There are two categories of Shea Butter –based skin care products. The first category is those products which contain 5% or less of Shea Butter. The second category is the shea butter skin care that contains 10 % or more.

The products in the second category deliver greater moisturization and healing effects to the skin. In fact, studies have shown that most effective products were those that contain at least 15% Shea Butter. This category produced greater antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as better healing capabilities.

So, buyer beware! Be sure to read the label of your products to ensure that you are receiving high-potent skin care. Just because the front of your skin carecontainer reads the words “Shea Butter” on it, it does not mean Shea Butter is one of the main ingredients at the recommended 15% or greater strength.

The Dangers of Shea Butter?

We are often asked here at the Shea Butter Blog about the dangers of using Shea Butter. Shea Butter that is pure and organic with no additives or fragrances is extremely safe to use. In fact, Shea Butter is safe enough to eat! For example, it is used as a butter substitute in Japan, in chocolates in Europe, and as cooking oil in Africa.

There have been no toxic reactions to the use of Shea Butter, either externally or internally. Just be sure to choose a Shea Butter product that is organic and naturally extracted to ensure a safe healthy experience.

Shea Butter, Pregnancy, and Childbirth

Shea Butter may indeed be a pregnant woman's best friend for the following reasons:

STRETCH MARKS
For thousands of years women have covered their growing-baby-bellies with shea butter to improve elasticity thereby preventing stretch marks.

DELIVERY

In Ghana, women going through labor and delivery often squat over basins with hot water and Shea Butter to ease labor pains. Some women also massage themselves with Shea Butter to prevent tearing and to prevent having a epiostomy.

NEW BORN BABIES

Mothers rub Shea Butter on thier newborn babies to protect them from the hot summer sun. They also rub Shea Butter on their babies after bathing to keep skin from drying.

Shea Butter, Lipids and your Skin Care

One of the primary purposes of the lipids(or fats) in various skincare regimens is to form a barrier to prevent moisture loss when it is absorbed by the outer layers of the skin. This is what keeps our skin soft and supple.

However, with Shea Butter, the lipids serve this function and more! It goes beyond the formation of just a barrier to prevent the loss of moisture. Additionally, it gives your skin anti-inflammatory support which ultimately retards the aging process. It also promotes the regeneration of skin cells while protecting against infection and irritation as it feeds your skin rich moisturizing lipids.

Remember that in addition to applying lipid rich Shea Butter to your skin, you should make sure your diet has ample “good fats” to moisturize from within.

Shea Butter for Insect Bites & Insect Repellent

As we are all in the midst of summer, enjoying the great outdoors whether it is camping, fishing or day at the beach is great fun. However, your fun can be instantly ruined due to insect bites.

Due to the dangerous toxic chemicals in alot of the commercial insect repellants, people are turning to more natural alternaives such as Shea Butter. Shea Butter is actually an effective insect repellant.

A study published in a French Medical Journal titled Bulletin de la Societe de Pathologie Exotique, Shea Butter was found to be an effective, affordable, and practical means to prevent insect bites.

And if you happen to get an insect bite because you forgot to put on your Shea Butter before going out, remember that Shea Butter has powerful ant-inflammatory properties to stop itching and to reduce redness & swelling.

The moisturizers in Shea Butter

Did you know that the moisturizers in shea butter are the same ones produced by the sebaceous glands in your skin? The sebaceous glands in the skin are responsible for oil production and keeping your skin soft and supple. As we age, these glands produce less and less sebum (oil) which is evidenced by dry wrinkled skin.

Shea Butter actually mimics your natural moisturizers in your skin making it an outstanding humectant and moisturizer. There have beeen several studies conducted that showcase Shea Butter's all-natural anti-aging abilities. We will focus on these studies in our next few posts.

Did you know that damage from the sun produces free radicals? This is important to know because these free radicals increase the rate at which skin ages and can even become cancerous. You skin needs protection especially during the summer months.

Because Organic Shea Butter contains natural UV sun protection, daily usage on the face and body drastically reduces sun exposure while slowing down the effects of aging. It also acts as a natural barrier to protect against elements such as smoke, smog and environmental pollutants in the air.

So before you go out today in the beautiful summer sun, remember that Organic Shea Butter is your skin’s best friend during this time of the year.

Shea Butter :Effective natural therapy for dry cough, stubborn catarrh, runny nose

We just ran across an interesting article in the Natural Health section of the Nigerian Tribune titled: SHEA BUTTER, LIME: Effective natural therapy for dry cough, stubborn catarrh, runny nose by Seye Adeniyi.

The article staes that Shea Butter "... is also medicinal as it has anti fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral as well as anti-inflammatory properties. To use it to cure persistence cough, catarrh, runny nose etc, all you have to do is to get the type that is used for cooking purpose, which is also edible, melt it at a very low temperature in order not to denature its medicinal properties, and add little quantity of salt. Mix it throughly and take one to two table spoonfull in the morning before eating as well as late in the evening. Before you know it, that stubborn cough, catarrah and runny nose would have disappeared. It is called shea butter therapy."

Here at the Shea Butter Blog, we are proud to produce effectice skin care solutions that are also SAFE and FREE of toxic cancer causing chemicals. We ran across an interesting article that we thought anyone who wears cosmetics should read.

Shea Butter Tree is truly the "Tree of Life"!

Almost all parts of the Shea Butter tree have some practical use.

BARK

The bark of the Shea Butter tree is an ingredient in traditional medicines against certain childhood illnesses and minor scrapes and cuts.

SHELL

The shell of the nuts can repel mosquitoes.

FRUIT

Above all, because it is completely non-toxic and gentle, the fruity part of the Shea Butter kernel, when crushed, yields a vegetable oil that can be used in soap-making, cooking, and skin and hair care.

We can clearly see now why this tree is called the "Tree of Life"!

Varieties of Shea Butter Trees

There are two kinds of Shea Butter Trees:

1.)The nilotic shea-butter tree, Vitellaria paradoxa ssp. nilotica, a is slow-growing hardwood fruit tree indigenous to northern Uganda and Southern Sudan.

2.) The Mangifolia tree, found in the semi-arid savannahs of West and Central Africa is also known as the Karite Tree which means “Tree of Life.”

The Shea Butter from the first tree is more oily and is naturally pure white. It has a very distinctive aroma which is quite different from the Shea Butter from the Karite Tree. It is considered to be a good moisturizer but not as good at healing skin conditions compared to the second kind of Shea Butter.

Tomorrow we will touch on the different uses for the various parts of the Shea Butter Tree.

VItamins in Shea Butter

Did you know that Shea Butter naturally contains vitamins and minerals for healthy skin?

For example, Unrefined Certified Organic Shea Butter is loaded with A which is needed for healthy skin. In fact, it is an all-natural Vitamin A cream. This vitamin is important for improving a number of skins conditions, including dermatitis, blemishes, wrinkles and and eczema. It is also promotes epidermis cell development and fibroblast activity.

A powerful antioxidant which helps to prevent free radical damage is Vitamin E. Based on the observation that skin damage caused by the sun and other environmental agents are induced by free radicals, there is the possibility that vitamin E may be effective in preventing skin damage. It also increases circulation to the skin.

Earth Day and Shea Butter Blog

Here at Purely Shea- The Leader in Organic Shea Butter Skincare, we wanted to take a little time out to talk about EARTH DAY.

The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. Twenty million people across America celebrated this event. It was a time when cities were buried under their own smog and polluted rivers caught fire. Now Earth Day is celebrated annually around the globe. Through the combined efforts of the U.S. government, grassroots organizations, and citizens like you, what started as a day of national environmental recognition has evolved into a world-wide campaign to protect our global environment.

We hope that you will do something special for Earth Day 2007. We will be sure to do something special right here at the Shea Butter Blog-so stay tuned!

Shea Butter History Lesson

Just thought it would be good time to go over a brief history of Shea Butter. Enjoy!

There are mentions of Shea Butter dating as far back as Cleopatra in historical documents that mention caravans bearing clay jars of valuable Shea Butter being used for cosmetic use. Shea trees were also used to make the funeral beds of royalty.

A 14th century historian and ambassador by the name of Ibn Batouta was entrusted by the Morocco sultan with a diplomatic mission at the court of Mali traveled throughout west Africa and in 1348 reported the about many uses of Shea Butter.

Scot Mungo Park introduced Shea Butter to Europe and was the first to describe the botanical characteristics of the Shea tree, and the various applications of the “butter” derived from it.

Shea Butter vs Shea Butter Oil

Shea Butter itself is a solid oil but when it is lightly heated, it separates into its fractionated and unfractionated portions. The Shea oil is obtained as a fractionated "by-product" of Shea butter production directly from the seed.

For light moisturization, Shea Butter Oil proves to be a natural and effective way to relieve dryness. However, if deeper moisturization is needed, or if healing for specific skin condition is wanted, Shea Butter produces better results. This is because the healing factors are in both the fractionated and unfractionated components.

Sustainability and Shea Butter

According to the U.S. EPA Sustainability is defined as follows:

"Sustainability is the ability to achieve continuing economic prosperity while protecting the natural systems of the planet and providing a high quality of life for its people. Achieving sustainable solutions calls for stewardship, with everyone taking responsibility for solving the problems of today and tomorrow-individuals, communities, businesses and governments are all stewards of the environment. "

Did you know that Shea Butter comes from a renewable and sustainable resource: the kernel of a green, sweet and fleshy fruit? Well ,the fruit trees grow wild throughout the West African savannah. Women and their children collect these fruits, high in vitamins. After consumption, the pits are collected to extract their soft, healing butter.

Ask yourself, 'how susutainable are the products that I am using?'

SHEA BUTTER QUICK TIP

So spring is finally here and Summer will be just around the corner! Just wanted to provide this Shea Butter quick to everyone for a Shea Buttery Smooth Summer.

DO NOT KEEP SHEA BUTTER IN YOUR CAR DURING SUMMER MONTHS.
Just as the name "butter" implies, Shea Butter will melt if left in your car in the extreme summer heat. But what if you forget this quick tip? Simply return the Shea Butter to room temp and it will solidify with 24 hours.

World Chocolate Shortage and Shea Butter

MSN ran a story yesterday about the world-wide shortage of chocolate. They stated the following:

"A drought in Western Africa and unrest in the Ivory Coast -- the world's biggest cocoa producer -- has combined with rising consumer taste for cocoa-rich dark chocolate to raise concerns about a shortage in supply."

Now what does this have to do with Shea Butter you may be asking yourself. Well, Shea Butter is often used as a cocoa substitute when making chocolate. So if there is a cocoa shortage, the demand for Shea Butter will increase causing the price to go up.

Here at Purely Shea-The Leader in Organic Shea Butter Skincare, we will watch this closely and keep you updated about any Shea Butter shortages.

Shea Butter and Safe Cosmetics

As many of you know, Purely Shea is apart of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics whose goal is to protect the health of consumers and workers by requiring the health and beauty industry to phase out the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems, and replace them with safer alternatives.

You may be asking your self "What can I do to get products that are safe for my family? Well here is a direct quote from the Safe Cosmetics Website on what to do:

"In the short term, you can choose safer products and learn more about the issue of cosmetics safety at www.safecosmetics.org. But we can’t just shop our way out of this problem. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics believes that consumers should not have to memorize long lists of hazardous chemicals in order to protect our families. Chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects do not belong in any beauty products, at any level. We should all be able to walk into any store and buy health and beauty products that are safe for babies and safe for everyone. Cancer is an epidemic in our society: 1 in 2 men in the United States, and 1 in 3 women will get cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. Companies must be required to eliminate cancer-causing chemicals from all possible sources immediately – starting with baby shampoo and bubble bath. Take action at: http://www.safecosmetics.org/action/"

Purely Shea - The Leader in Organic Shea Butter Skincare is proud to be apart of this campaign!!

Shea Butter isn't a New Trend!! (Google patents proves it!!)

We are always touting here at Purely Shea that Shea Butter has been used for many years and is not a new trend. Often people think Shea Butter usage began around three or four years ago. Well we just did a Google patent search and saw alot of patents dating back to the 70's and 80's about Shea Butter!

One in particular that caught our eye was a patent issued to L'Oreal Cosmetics in 1984! It looks like this cosmetic company knew about Mother's Nature's best kept secret over 20 years ago. ( um...and it appears they tried to keep this secret to themselves :-)

There are alot more interesting Shea Butter patents we found. We'll post more soon.

Waxing and Shaving with Shea Butter

I had my eyebrows waxed and tweezed this weekend. Although they look amazing, it hurt a lot and left a red rash with raised bumps! So it was Shea Butter to the rescue. Within minutes Purely Shea soothed the area and an hour later all the redness and bumps disappeared.

Purely Shea is also great for shaving. In fact, premium quality organic unrefined shea butter reduces the shearing force between the skin and the blade. This allows for a less traumatic, smoother, and closer shave. Additionally, since the shea butter continues to nourish and moisturize the shaved area, this eliminates the need for after-shave lotions and creams.

Unrefined Certified Organic Shea Butter is a superior shaving cream for the following reasons:
• Conditions and prepares the skin for the shave
• Protects the skin during the shave
• Nourishes the skin after the skin
• Encourages natural healing of the skin after the shave

The Globalization of Shea Butter

We just read a very interesting article about the globalization of shea butter published by the UCLA Globalization Research Center-Africa (GRCA). " The overall aim of the Center is to engage in research on ways global forces impact upon African societies; the ways in which African societies have an impact upon the globalization process; and the comparative, cross national and cross cultural comparison of global processes as they relate to Africa."

It was great to read how shea butter is no longer just a local staple but "In Europe, North America, and Japan, shea butter is now prized for its superb healing and moisturizing properties. It is an important ingredient in creams, sunscreens, conditioners, and in the treatment of burns and muscle pains. Commercial interest in shea also centers on its use as a substitute for cocoa butter in the chocolate industry."

Shea Butter as Your MIneral Make-Up Primer

Here at Purely Shea-The Leader in Organic Shea Butter Skincare, we (the ladies anyway) have been trying some all-natural make-up alternatives and we absolutely love mineral make-up.

For those of you unfamiliar with mineral make-up, they are cosmetics that are made of only the purest ingredients, based on minerals found in the earth. Made almost entirely from pure pigments, mineral cosmetics are used very sparingly to achieve a fabulous coverage with an extremely lightweight feel.

Because the ingredients are all inert minerals, which cannot harbor bacteria, no preservative is necessary, and their shelf life is indefinite. No talc, dyes, oils, or chemicals are used which cause enlarging of pores

However, those of us with really dry skin noticed the mineral make-up left us looking overly dry and cakey. Our Solution? Purely Shea shea butter to the rescue! Apply shea butter sparingly underneath foundation and let it sink for a few minutes to avoid streaking. The result? Glowly and radiant mineral make-up without the dryness.
