Shea Butter as Your MIneral Make-Up Primer

Here at Purely Shea-The Leader in Organic Shea Butter Skincare, we (the ladies anyway) have been trying some all-natural make-up alternatives and we absolutely love mineral make-up.

For those of you unfamiliar with mineral make-up, they are cosmetics that are made of only the purest ingredients, based on minerals found in the earth. Made almost entirely from pure pigments, mineral cosmetics are used very sparingly to achieve a fabulous coverage with an extremely lightweight feel.

Because the ingredients are all inert minerals, which cannot harbor bacteria, no preservative is necessary, and their shelf life is indefinite. No talc, dyes, oils, or chemicals are used which cause enlarging of pores

However, those of us with really dry skin noticed the mineral make-up left us looking overly dry and cakey. Our Solution? Purely Shea shea butter to the rescue! Apply shea butter sparingly underneath foundation and let it sink for a few minutes to avoid streaking. The result? Glowly and radiant mineral make-up without the dryness.

Keeping Shea Butter Fresh

We all want our skin care products to natural and organic. However, we should make sure that we are using fresh products. The following are a few tips to keep your Shea Butter fresh:

HEAT
Heat can cause the Shea Butter to become rancid. It is important to keep it in room temperature to avoid this.

LIGHT
Choose Shea Butter products that come in opaque containers to prevent the product from degrading.

OXYGEN
Keep Shea Butter containers sealed tightly to prevent auto-oxidation which is the chief cause of quality loss.

NEW Shea Butter Recipe: Exfoliating Scrub

Did you know that your moisturizer, like Purely Shea shea butter, will work much better if you exfoliate first? Exfoliating allows products to penetrate better. That's because exfoliating removes the surface layer of dead cells that can limit how much of your moisturizer gets through.

For a smooth, all-natural exfoliating scrub grab the following:
  • Organic fine ground sugar
  • Your favorite all-natural facial cleanser
  • Organic unrefined Shea Butter

While washing your face with your favorite cleanser, once or twice a week add a handful of the organic sugar and little organic shea butter and lightly massage into skin and rinse. You will instantly notice soft glowing skin!

Beyond removing those pesky dead skin cells, exfoliating can also
1. Improve the texture of your skin
2. Make your skin look more radiant
3. Help reduce lines and wrinkles
4. Reveal healthier-looking skin below
5. Remove pore-clogging dirt
6. Help prevent acne outbreaks
7. Allow moisturisers to penetrate your skin more deeply

Shea Butter Intensive Treatment

We have the most creative customers here at Purely Shea – The Leader in Organic Shea Butter Skincare. One of our customers recently e-mailed us about a great way to provide super intensive moisture to your hands and knees.

Cara Brooks, of Evergreen Park, IL e-mailed us that during the winter months, her hands and feet really take a beating from the cold and wind. To combat these effects she takes the following steps:

After her evening shower, while her hands and feet are still wet, she slathers on Purely Shea.
Next, she puts on soft organic cotton gloves and socks and goes to sleep.
In the morning, she awakes with super soft, supple and younger looking hands and feet!

Give this tip a try and let us know what you think!

Trust Shea Butter for Natural Skin Care

We ran across a very interesting article published in the New York Times yesterday titled “Should You Trust Your Make-up?” It speaks about the toxic chemicals in our skin care and what you can do about it.

The article states:
“Part of the push for greater oversight stems from concerns about health trends, like increased reports of early puberty, asthma and allergies. Some scientists and health groups want to know if there is any connection to the aggregate exposure to chemicals.

A handful of small case studies and anecdotal reports, published in medical journals, suggest that a few ingredients used in some cosmetics could potentially have a hormonal or allergenic affect on humans.”

Natural Skin Care Tip: Shea Butter Spread Test

How do you know if your natural and organic skin care shea butter is authentic? You should look for a third party approval on your packaging such as the USDA Certified Organic Seal to verify authenticity. Also sending a sample of your shea butter to a lab can verify your natural skin care.

A test you can do at home is the “Butter Knife Spread Test.” At room temp, authentic unrefined certified organic Shea Butter will spread nice and smooth without crumbling to pieces. If the Shea Butter is difficult to spread, or if it is lumpy and crumbles, it may be cut with other ingredients.

On occasion, Shea Butter can appear grainy in its most natural state. But if it is authentic Shea Butter, even grainy shea will spread smooth and evenly when put to the butter knife test. Choosing natural skin care can be tricky, but with easy tests like this, you are bound to choose the best!

Valentine's Chocolates and Shea Butter

So tomorrow is Valentine’s Day! Well while you are out shopping for that special someone today, don’t forget to pick-up some decadently delicious chocolates. YUM!

You might be asking yourself ‘What does Shea Butter have to do with chocolate?’ The worldwide availability of Shea Butter depends at times on the needs of the chocolate industry. To make chocolate, the chocolate manufacturers use Shea Butter as cocoa substitute in many chocolate products. In fact, Shea Butter's use in the cosmetic industry is a very small fraction of the annual overall Shea Butter harvest.

Here are some other great reasons (besides Shea Butter) to buy chocolate today:

* The smell of chocolate may increase theta brain waves, resulting in relaxation.
* Chocolate contains phenyl ethylamine, a mild mood elevator.
* The cocoa butter in chocolate contains oleic acid, a mono-unsaturated fat which may raise good cholesterol.
* Drinking a cup of hot chocolate before meals may actually diminish appetite.
* Men who eat chocolate live a year longer than those who don't..
* Chocolate increases antioxidant levels in the blood.
* Mexican healers use chocolate to treat bronchitis and insect bites.
* The carbohydrates in chocolate raise serotonin levels in the brain, resulting in a sense of well-being.

Shea Butter Winter Tip

One of our customers here at Purely Shea just contacted us with a winter shea butter tip that she thinks we should share with everyone.

June Mc Graw, of Roseville, Minnesota began using Purely Shea this summer and loves to keep it in her car so she can massage it in before going out in the cold winter weather. Well she called us very disappointed to find out that her Purely Shea shea butter became frozen solid after leaving it in the car during this super cold winter.

We instructed her to bring the container back in room temp overnight. She noticed it was softer but still harder than she liked. We then provided her with instructions on how to properly melt the shea butter to return it to its soft consistency.

I will give specific directions on how to melt shea butter tomorrow. Until then, please remember this tip:

DO NOT KEEP PURELY SHEA IN YOUR CAR DURING THE COLD WINTER OR IT WILL FREEZE!

Shea Butter: A Natural Skin Care RX for Eczema

Shea Butter is not only used as a superior moisturizer but it can also help with the treatment of some skin conditions such as eczema. We ran across this article in the Washington Post this weekend with the following quote:

“Washington dermatologist Cheryl Burgess said regular use of a good emollient, such as shea butter, can keep eczema totally at bay in some patients. ‘It creates a shield so the patient isn't losing a lot of moisture,’ Burgess said.”

Click Here to Read The Full Article.

Here at Purely Shea we always recommend that you contact your Health Care Provider for any condition you may have. It is nice to know, however, that this same practitioner may point you in the direction of Shea Butter for your skin care woes.

A Boost to the Shea Butter Industry

We just ran across the following article about a new Shea Butter project! Read it below and let us know what you think.

Shea butter industry gets boost
Posted on: 28-Jan-2007
http://www.myjoyonline.com/news/read.asp?contentid=1071

"THE shea butter industry in the Central Gonja District in the Northern Region has received a major boost with the inauguration of a shea butter processing centre at Buipe.

Products from the centre would be exported to the Tree of Life, a cosmetic industry in Japan.

The project, estimated at 22O million, was funded by the Farmer-Based Organisation of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), while the Dew of Charity, a non-governmental organisation operating in the Central Gonja District, supervised the project.

Two hundred and thirty-five members, mainly women of the Abranyo Wale One-stop Centre Association (AWOSCA), a co-operative society in the area, would benefit from the project that has facilities such as a multipurpose resources centre, offices for banking and conferences.

In his inaugural address, the Director of SAN Framework for Technical Collaboration (SAAJFTC), Dr Foster Sakara, entreated the government, civil society and the private sector to provide the necessary facilities and resources to help explore the potential of the shea butter industry in the north.

Dr Sakara observed that shea butter was the only viable agricultural produce in the Sahelian region that needed to be fully developed and urged the government to play a more proactive role in its development.

The Project Manager of Integrated Literacy and Agro-processing Programme, Chief Abdul-Rahim Adam, said the AWOSCA was formed based on the “principle of collective action of aggregation of demand to reduce transaction costs of services needed or provided”.

The Central Gonja District Chief Executive, Mr. Yakubu Zakaria, urged stakeholders in the shea butter industry to support the project to enhance incomes of farmers and thus reduce poverty in the area. "
