World Chocolate Shortage and Shea Butter

MSN ran a story yesterday about the world-wide shortage of chocolate. They stated the following:

"A drought in Western Africa and unrest in the Ivory Coast -- the world's biggest cocoa producer -- has combined with rising consumer taste for cocoa-rich dark chocolate to raise concerns about a shortage in supply."

Now what does this have to do with Shea Butter you may be asking yourself. Well, Shea Butter is often used as a cocoa substitute when making chocolate. So if there is a cocoa shortage, the demand for Shea Butter will increase causing the price to go up.

Shea Butter isn't a New Trend!! (Google patents proves it!!)

We are always touting here at Purely Shea that Shea Butter has been used for many years and is not a new trend. Often people think Shea Butter usage began around three or four years ago. Well we just did a Google patent search and saw alot of patents dating back to the 70's and 80's about Shea Butter!

One in particular that caught our eye was a patent issued to L'Oreal Cosmetics in 1984! It looks like this cosmetic company knew about Mother's Nature's best kept secret over 20 years ago. ( um...and it appears they tried to keep this secret to themselves :-)

We just read a very interesting article about the globalization of shea butter published by the UCLA Globalization Research Center-Africa (GRCA). " The overall aim of the Center is to engage in research on ways global forces impact upon African societies; the ways in which African societies have an impact upon the globalization process; and the comparative, cross national and cross cultural comparison of global processes as they relate to Africa."

It was great to read how shea butter is no longer just a local staple but "In Europe, North America, and Japan, shea butter is now prized for its superb healing and moisturizing properties. It is an important ingredient in creams, sunscreens, conditioners, and in the treatment of burns and muscle pains. Commercial interest in shea also centers on its use as a substitute for cocoa butter in the chocolate industry."
