Shea Butter for Flu Season

Did you know that Shea Butter has been used for hundreds of years by traditional healers to help relieve a stuffy nose? In fact is was proven that Shea Butter has the ability to act as an nasal decongenstant in preliminary studies? Natural skin care is also quite therapeutic.

Well an article published almost 30 years ago in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology concluded that Shea Butter worked better than the conventional nasal drops used in the study.

Shea Butter - The Frizzy Hair Cure

We all want lush, lustrous and beautiful hair. Fighting the frizzies is imperative to have a smooth gorgeous mane. So what can cause frizzie hair? It can be any number of reasons such as genetics, too much blow drying, use of mouse products, chemical damage, chlorine damage, or the need to change up your shampoo/conditioner products.

As always, shea butter is here to the rescue! It only takes a small amount to the job. Scoop out a small amount and melt it by rubbing it between your hands. Then rub the shea butter through your hair. The hair will be left smooth and shiny and never greasy.

You can also keep the frizzies away by
  • Don't use hair brushes
  • Don't rub hair with towel when wet
  • Don't use a blow dryer; use diffuser or air dry hair

Shea Butter in Warfare

We just received a very interesting press release about how shea butter was used in warfare to ward off bullets. Here at Purely Shea we know that Shea Butter is great but NOT that great!

This is what the press release said about shea butter : "A self-proclaimed Acholi warrior priestess, Ms. Lakwena talked thousands of followers to go into battle armed with only sticks and stones. They sang Christian-animist hymns and their chests were smeared with shea butter, which they believed would turn bullets into water. She told them the sticks could turn bees into bullets and the stones would explode like grenades."

Five Ways to Tell if Your Skin Care is Natural - PART 4 SUSTAINABILITY

Are your natural skin care and organic beauty products sustainable? Here at Purely Shea - The Leader in Organic Shea Butter Skincare we believe and uphold the standards of sustainable living.

You may be asking yourself, what is sustainability? Well, the U.K. government defines it as :
“Sustainable development is a very simple idea. It is about ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come." - Opportunities for Change, Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, 1998.

How Is Purely Shea Unrefined Certified Organic Shea Butter Sustainable?
Think about the following.
  • Nothing is wasted from the shea nut - as well as its use in cosmetics, the shell is used as fuel, and the oil for cooking
  • Shea nuts are a readily available natural resource and are harvested by local people.
  • The women shea breakers work locally, collecting nuts and extracting kernels at the same time as looking after their children and homes.
  • The shea but tree is vital as a source of income for local people.
  • The status and influence of women has been significantly improved as a result of their involvement in producing shea butter
  • Trade has increased the importance of shea butter and its conservation has become more important.

Sustainable natural skin care and organic skin care is good for us, the environment and for generations to come. Sustainable development is about improving quality of life by integrating three factors: Economic development, Environmental protection, and Social responsibility. Shea Butter is a wonderfully sustaiable product! How do your other natural beauty products measure?

Purely Shea shea butter Featured on Advice Sisters!

We are so excited that Purely Shea-The Leader in Organic Shea Butter Skincare is featured in this month's Advice Sisters "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion Review Column by Alison Blackman Dunham.!

She says that "Devotees use shea butter for everything from insect bites to muscle aches, poison ivy and even on the family dog! I think it's a good staple to add to your medicine cabinet. Case in point: recently I got a nasty paper cut on my finger that was really irritating, but one application of shea butter soothed it, immediately, and left my hands softer, too! "

Five Ways to Tell if Your Skin Care is Natural - PART 3 CRUELTY-FREE BEAUTY

Not only should your natural skin care and organic skin care products have pure non-synthetic ingredients, they must also be cruelty-free. At Purely Shea, our unrefined certified organic shea butter is completely cruelty free.

Check out the following cruelty-free criteria that natural skin care products and organic skin care products should have:

1. Derived from an animal killed specifically for the extraction of that ingredient
2. Forcibly extracted from a live animal in a manner that occasioned pain or discomfort
3. Derived from any wildlife
4. That are by-products of the fur industry
5. That are slaughterhouse by-products of a commercially significant value

Animal testing is not necessary to ensure consumer safety. Although the companies claim to be using these tests for consumer safety, many hundreds of companies worldwide do not test on animals. Animal testing is not designed to protect the consumer, but to protect the company against you in case you sue.

If concern for the consumer is of paramount importance, then why do manufacturers consider using potentially dangerous substances in products such as cosmetics and toiletries? Surely, only ingredients which are known to be safe enough to be firstly and only tested on humans should be considered.

Hundreds of companies use only natural ingredients with a long history of safe use, and/or one or more of the alternative methods of testing such as culture tests, computer models and human volunteer trials. Purely Shea Unrefined Certified Organic Shea Butter is one of these companies. Be sure to read your labels of other natural skin care and organic skin care products for cruelty-free options.

Five Ways To Tell If Your Skin Care Is Natural: PART 2 INGREDIENTS

Natural is the new buzzword in cosmetics. So many companies are using the word “Natural” in entire product lines when in fact these products are anything but natural.

Here are some of the ingredients I found in so called natural skin care products when I stopped by the local drug store:

Methylparaben
Propylene Glycol
Phenoxyethanol
Imidazalidol Urea
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Octyl Stearate
Fragrance

I even got excited when I saw a few shea butter products to find that after reading the ingredients, there was NO SHEA BUTTER IN THE PRODUCT! I was appalled to say the least. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting spectacular Pure Certified Organic Shea Butter, but I did expect to see shea butter listed somwhere and it wasn't.

So what should you do to protect yourself from dangerous unnatural skin care products? Always READ THE INGREDIENTS!!!! But reading the ingredients is not enough. Be sure to research your ingredients. One good way to do this is via a website called Skin Deep.

Skin Deep is a personal care product safety guide with in-depth information on 14,841 products - 1,052 brands of lotion, lip balm, deodorant, sunscreen and other popular products - and the 7,093 ingredients that form them. With its core of 37 toxicity and regulatory databases, Skin Deep provides safety ratings and brand-by-brand comparisons that can help consumers choose safer products.

Major loopholes in federal law allow the $35 billion cosmetics industry to put unlimited amounts of chemicals into personal care products with no required testing, no monitoring of health effects, and inadequate labeling requirements. So don’t bee fooled by the word “Natural” on the front of a product. Always look deeper at the ingredients.
