TOP 5 Ways to Winter-Proof your Skin with SUPERFOOODS

Every winter here at the Shea Butter Blog we focus on some great ways Shea Butter can be used to winter-proof your skin. From head-to-toe it can help with parched hair, flaky skin, chapped lips, cracked hands and tough feet.

But did you now that there are some powerful Superfoods that can also combat winter skin woes?  Well according to nutritionist Dale Pinnock who is the author of The Clear Skin Cookbook, if you eat the right foods you’ll see the benefits in your skin in a few weeks.

WINTER SKIN PROBLEM #1  Dry Flaky Skin and Eczema

Eat foods and take supplements that are full of essential fatty acids that reduce water loss in your skin. This will help you to maintain high levels of moisture. Some of the food sources of ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acids are fish and shellfish, flaxseed (linseed), hemp oil, soya oil, canola (rapeseed) oil, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, leafy vegetables, and walnuts. Daily fish oil supplements can be used or if you are a vegetarian, DHA algae supplements can also be included to maintain moisturized skin.

WINTER SKIN PROBLEM #2   Dull Skin Tone

Vitamin E can help you to get a more radiant glow. Foods high in Vitamin E include yellow and orange fruits and vegetables. So stock up on carrots, sweet potatoes, mangos and orange and yellow peppers. In addition to Vitamin E, each of these foods contain carotenoids, antioxidants that nourish the layers of skin.
Be sure to also include more blueberries, blackberries, and black grapes. These can all help your skin because they contain anthocyanidins, a pigment that has been found to strengthen collagen fibers resulting in much firmer and more radiant skin.

WINTER SKIN PROBLEM #3  Tired Skin

Since you get 90 per cent of your vitamin D from the sun exposure, during the winter months you will have lower levels of vitamin D than normal.  As a result, it’s not surprising  you may regularly suffer with low energy levels and this tiredness is instantly reflected in your skin.
Oily fish is the best dietary source, but egg yolks, liver and wild mushrooms contain essential quantities of vitamin D too.  If you are a vegetarian, only mushrooms contain this vitamin but there some herbs which contain good amounts of vitamin D such as ALFALFA, RED RASPBERRY LEAVES, MULLEIN LEAVES, EYEBRIGHT, FENUGREEK SEED, OAT STRAW, THYME, ROSE HIP SEED, AND SARSAPARILLA.  One good vegan supplement to try is from Dhealthstore :  http://www.dhealthstore.com/vitamin-d-100-capsules.html.

WINTER SKIN PROBLEM # 4: Chapped skin

Increasing your B-vitamins is important because these vitamins deliver nutrients and regulate the turnover of skin cells  and this is exactly what you need to recover from dry, chapped, and flaky winter skin.
Brown rice and dark green vegetables, broccoli, kale, and greens are rich in B-vitamins. Adding dark green vegetables to your lunch, dinner, or smoothie snack every day will help to prvent flaking chapped skin.

WINTER SKIN PROBLEM #5: Acne break-outs

Did you know that too much sugar stimulates sebaceous glands increasing break outs? Well too much sugarin the diet can stimulate the production of the male hormone androgen, which can increase acne and breakouts So when you get those sweet-cravings, grab some of  the yummy fruits we listed above instead and your skin will thank you.

Winter-proof your hair with Shea Butter

As we continue our winter-proof series, today we want to focus on reducing dry brittle hair during this season. Shea Butter can be a big help in eliminating your hair woes. Here are some quick and easy ways to keep tresses beautiful all winter long.

1.) Before Your Shampoo
Prior to washing your hair, you may use Shea Butter as a pre-shampoo conditioner to combat the effects of the harsh weather. Gently melt it and then apply to hair allowing it to stay on there for 20 minutes. Then proceed with shampooing.

2.) During Your Shampoo
This can also be added to your shampoo in small amounts for an easy shampoo that leaves your hair felling soft and manageable.

3) After Your Shampoo
You can now prevent any cold weather damage to your hair by applying as a deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner, or detangler.

4) Daily Maintenance
After carefully melting between the palms of your hands, apply as a daily hair-dressing for super soft lucious locks.

Shea Butter Make-up Remover Part 1

Shea Butter Make-up Remover Part 1

When taking off your make-up it is important that you keep in mind that oil can dissolve oil. This means that an oil such as Purely Shea Shea Butter is great for removing oil based cosmetics. This can be used even if you are prone to breakouts because oil alone will not cause blemishes. Most blemishes are a result of a variety of issues such as hormones, bacteria, dead skin cells and the buildup these on your skin.

Purely Shea Organic Shea Butter can be used as a cleansing oil for easy removal of all cream and oil-based cosmetics. After makeup has been removed, the skin feels fresh and relaxed as the shea butter deeply cleans while preserving the skin's necessary protective lipid layer.

Stay tuned for the next blog post which will give you a step-by-step approach for using shea butter as as wonderful make-up remover.

Shea Butter for Scalp Massage

Massage is one of the best ways to soothe away stress.

One type of massage therapy that can be applied is called scalp massage. Massaging the scalp can help stimulate the nerves and blood vessels beneath the skin while calming muscle tension around the head. In fact, scalp massages have been incorporated into therapeutic practice for about 5,000 years as part of ayurveda, a holistic medicine.
Using Purely Shea Shea Butter is great way to indulge in a therapeutic scalp massage while also providing deep moisturizing for anyone who has a dry scalp.
The great thing about scalp massage is that you can perform it on yourself. Simply grab some Purely Shea Shea Butter and use your  fingers to rub the base of the scalp beneath the hair, the sides of the head, the forehead, chin, hairline, neck, shoulders and spine for a relaxing scalp massage.

STOP Split Ends with Shea Butter

Stop Split Ends with Shea Butter

1.) Use Purely Shea Shea Butter as a pre-shampoo treatment concentrating the product on your split ends.

2.) After the pre-shampoo treatment, wash hair with a moisturizing conditioning shampoo and use a rinse out moisturizing conditioner focusing on your split ends

3.) Rinse with cool water to seal the hair's outer layer.

4.) Detangle with a wide-tooth comb.

5.) Melt Purely Shea Shea Butter in the palms of your hands and glide it over split ends.

6.) Be sure to dry your hair thoroughly; split ends look worse when they're frizzy.

7.) To camouflage the ends, use Purely Shea as a light heat protectant when hair is completely dry. Then use a ceramic or Teflon flatiron to straighten the bottom inch of your hair.

Remember that it is impossible to prevent split ends entirely because of normal wear and tear. Because split ends can lead to breakage higher up on the hair shaft getting regular trims is important to your hair's health.

    Shea Butter for Diaper Rash

We all know how horrible diaper rash can be. It looks bad, and can be really painful for your infant. Most of the time, diaper rash happens during bedtime, when moisture is trapped close to the skin for a long time.

If it is possible, allow your baby to go without a diaper in order for the skin to breathe if the rash is severe. Also rub Purely Shea Shea Butter on your baby's skin to protect it. There is natural latex in our Certified Virgin organic shea butter which is not irritating, but provides a protective barrier for your baby's skin, keeping moisture out. Remembering to rub it on at night will keep your baby drier, and will help to prevent diaper rash in the first place.

Stay tuned, later on today we will talk about the benefits of using Purely Shea shea butter to give your infant a wonderful massage. Don’t miss it, your baby will love this Certified Virgin organic shea butter treat!
